Isle of Sheppey Area Guide

ESTAS2023

The Isle of Sheppey, with a name derived from the ancient Saxon ‘Sceapige’, literally means the isle of sheep!

The island boasts a rich history in aviation developments and naval engagements and is fast becoming a popular destination for staycation and weekend getaways.

Sheerness is the biggest town on the Isle of Sheppey, appropriately served by a Tesco Superstore that takes care of all your essentials seven days a week.

Outdoor sports enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the beaches (awarded European Blue Flags for cleanliness and safety), coastal park, sailing club and golf club are all within a 10-minute drive of the town centre.

Minster is a beautiful village nearby, among many others like Eastchurch and Leysdown, where you can enjoy a tranquil and relaxing lifestyle. The Glen is an ample green space offering plenty of room for young children to play and families to gather. The promenade and sandy beaches are only a short walk away.

Two natural reserves sit on the other side of the island - Elmley and The Swale. Both are home to some of the rarest and stunning natural habitats and welcome visitors all year round.

The Isle of Sheppey is also well-connected to the mainland through two bridges (Kingsferry Bridge and Sheppey Crossing Bridge) and two main train stations (Sheerness and Queenborough).
